Symplectic Elements: Add Scholarly Activities using a DOI or ISBN

Find a DOI or ISBN

The DOI (digital object identifier)- DOI is a digital object identifier, the unique number assigned by the publisher to a publication that identifies the content and provides a persistent link to the publication on the internet. The ISBN is also a unique number given to a book by the publisher. Searching the exact DOI or ISBN is a good way to pinpoint the correct article, book or book chapter in Symplectic Elements.

There are several ways to find the DOI for journal articles, books or book chapters:

  • Check Crossref
  • Check an online database for the doi (e.g. Pubmed or Scopus)
  • Check the publisher’s website
  • Look on the first page of the PDF
  • Check Amazon (for an ISBN-book or book chapter only)
    • Some books have a doi-only books have an ISBN so finding either one will be helpful

Find the doi for a journal article in Crossref

Crossref Steps:

  1. To search a title in Crossref, go to the site and register an email to perform a free search.
  2. Enter in the title of the journal article or book/book chapter.
  3. If the item is found, copy the DOI number e.g. 10.1016/0197-0070(89)90274-X (do not include doi).
  4. Continue the search in Add Scholarly Activities Manually, pasting the doi in the search box.

Find the doi for a journal article in a Publisher's website

Publisher’s Website Steps:

  1. To find a doi in a website (e.g. JAMA, Wiley Online) searching the title in Google.
  2. Search the title of the journal article, book or book chapter.
  3. Once the journal article, book or book chapter is found look for the doi information on the page and copy the doi number e.g. 10.1001/jama.2016.0288
  4. Continue searching as seen in Add, pasting the doi in the search box.

Find the doi for a journal article in an online database

Online database Steps:

  1. Go to Scopus or Web of Science.
  2. Enter in the title of the journal article or book/book chapter.
  3. If the item is found, copy the doi number e.g. 10.1016/0197-0070(89)90274-X (do not include doi).
  4. Continue the search in Add Scholarly Activities Manually, pasting the doi in the search box.

Find the ISBN for a book in Amazon

Amazon  Steps (this is only for books and book chapters):

  1. Go to the Amazon website
  2. Search the book title.
  3. If the book is found look for the ISBN (either -10 or -13) either under the image of the book cover or in the Product Details. Copy the number e.g. 143150354.
  4. Continue searching as seen in the first column book or book chpater and paste the ISBN in the search box.

Add publication in Symplectic using a DOI

Using this method in Symplectic will check not only items already in Symplectic but also CrossRef (Extrenal)

  1. Go to the Home tab-My Summary. Click on +add and choose journal.
  2. Paste the DOI in the Title or DOI box and click Search.



    a. Found In Elements-means someone else is an author and has it in their profile.
    Click Claim.



    b. Found In External Database-means it was found using CrossRef.
    Click Claim.



    c. If the results are zero OR the results are not the item that you want Click Go to the next step and follow the directions to add publications Manually.

Add a book or book chapter using the ISBN

Using this method in Symplectic will check not only items already in Symplectic but also CrossRef (Extrenal)

  1. Go to the Home tab-My Summary. Click on +add and choose book or chapter.
     
  2. Paste the DOI in the Title or DOI box and click Search.

a. Found In Elements-means someone else is an author and has it in their profile.Click Claim if it is the correct item.


OR
b. Found in In Extrenal Databse-means it was found using CrossRef. Click Claim if it is the correct item.

c. If the results are zero OR the results are not the item that you want Click Go to next step and follow the directions to add publications Manually.
